Contributing to The Friend’s Auction is always a treat: an experience of giving imagination, heart, and time to directly benefit an organization that flourishes because so many support it from those same resources in themselves.
The range and tenacity of Matisse’s work are an inspiration, and over the last year I have been curious about his more abstract paintings done around the time he visited Morocco. I did some sketches of these works and played with weaving some of his themes into a traditional still life: the window, the railing, flat planes of color, simply drawn figures. In "Matisse's Balcony", the edge of the vase is where things shift from a realistic still life to a little glimpse into his world.
