"A Hope Chest"   by Dr. David Coursin

The simple beauty and proportions of the chest and its fabrication struck me when it was unveiled and I wanted to create something allowing these qualities to shine through. The earth image floating in the box came quickly that first night and then thoughts about what the image and its shadow evoke.  We are well into a world-changing ecological impasse, the earth increasingly trapped in a chest of our making.  It could fall further into the chest or float further out.  Ultimately it will continue, with or without us, but I fear for our ability to proceed in ways that allow humankind and the earth to flourish.  Human behavior as stewardship akin to the Shakers suggests how to do this. I hope we can absorb their lessons.  With that in mind, I have been calling this “A Hope Chest”.
