In Concord he decided to volunteer as a friendly visitor for The Friends Interfaith Caregiver Program. He was matched up with a 79 year old gentleman, Ray, who has lived in the area for most of his life. Tony had a variety of experiences throughout his life working with all kinds of people in the armed forces, schools, and adult education classes at his church. Ray also had had a variety of experiences throughout his lifetime. Ray's wife died in early 2000 and he missed her. He felt lonely in his home and wanted to get out once in a while. Ray was not able to drive because of poor eyesight. From their first meeting on, they exchanged several stories that they had experienced and that helped them learn about t heir common interests such as line dancing and activities at the Senior Center. The relationship became one of mutual exchange. Tony provided transportation to social activities and pleasant companionship that helped to reduce Ray’s feelings of loneliness. Ray shared his skills as a handyman often helping Tony with small home repairs. After meeting with Tony and Ray, one marvels at their condition and ability to live independently at their age. |
