Rachel's Story

Rachel’s life is full of challenges. She lives in a small, three-bedroom apartment with mom, step-dad, a brother, a sister, Uncle Joe and Aunt Mary. Mom works 60 hours a week in a local big box store, but the hours worked and money earned never are enough to cover the basic bills, let alone unexpected car repairs or medical expenses. Step-dad is disabled and often goes without his medications to save money so the family can keep a roof over their heads. Joe and Mary help by sharing expenses.

Rachel often goes to school in tattered, unclean clothes as money for the Laundromat is tough to come by. It’s hard for Rachel to keep up her self-esteem, as she is often the object of teasing at school because of her appearance. Rachel is smart, but studying at home presents many challenges. Emotions often run at the boiling point as the family struggles to survive in cramped quarters and in daily financial crisis.

Francis is a self-made woman who struggled through the challenges of poverty growing up and wanted to help a child. Rachel and Francis quickly formed a special bond and the match proved to be a weekly oasis for Rachel from the stresses at home. Weekly visits with Francis are a time when Rachel can have fun and be a kid. Rachel has experienced snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and even visited a mall for the very first time. But most importantly, Francis gives Rachel a priceless gift every time they meet—a chance to see the world through a difference lens and hope for a more promising future.
