Innovations in Senior Corps Program Managment's "2010 Innovator's Award"
Foster Grandparent Program Director, Alane Hill, recently received this award at the National Conference on Volunteerism in New York City for an innovative practice that increased volunteer recruitment by more than 70 percent over four years.
In rural areas, moderate income seniors are difficult to find, reach and move to respond with traditional low-budget advertising means. The idea to develop a mass mailing postcard, utilizing current market research on attracting seniors and targeting households by age and income (income levels are a Federal requirement to qualify for a stipend) had become the key to the Foster Grandparent Program's growth.
Volunteer programs throughout the country are now using this method to increase their volunteer enrollment. Ms. Hill has conducted a workshop on demographical preference in advertising and the qualities of a successful mailing at the National Points of Light Conference on Volunteerism in Kansas City and at the Corporation for National and Community Services' Tri-State Conference. She has also personally shared the best practice with more than 120 individual programs across the country.
