Artist: Catherine Kaplan
Catherine Thomas Kaplan, of Concord , NH, holds a BA in art history (Wellesley College, 1989), an MA in art education (Goddard College, 1998), and an Ed.M. in arts in education (Harvard University, 2013). She has completed courses in scientific illustration, textile design and watercolor painting and works primarily in pen and ink with colored pencil, watercolor and acrylics. Recent large scale projects include an Adirondack chair and bench for the Friends Program Auction (Concord, NH, 2011 and 2012), a backdrop for “Seussical, Jr.” at the Concord Community Music School, and a bulkhead depicting a cottage garden. Each year for the past seven, Catherine has also designed calendars and note cards illustrated with flowers, fruits and vegetables. By day, Catherine freelances as a graphic designer and publicist.
This watercolor, a departure from Catherine's pen and ink/colored pencil florals, which can be seen at www.ctk-art.com, was inspired by a photograph taken in her parents' backyard in Hopkinton. Catherine's parents lovingly planned, planted and tended this border garden each summer for as many years as she can remember. It was the backdrop to many family gatherings and the source of innumerable fragrant bouquets for family and friends...and the birdbath, a refreshing resting spot for neighborhood birds.
She is grateful to her husband, Dan, for his support of her artistic endeavors, and to her children, Miranda and Henry, who are her two biggest fans and join her in art making whenever possible.
